Ozaki procedure — aortic valve neocuspidization

Reconstruction of the aortic valve in which each cusp is replaced with the patient’s own pericardium, treated and cut to size during the operation. This page is for colleagues considering a referral.

1

Cases considered

  • Aortic stenosis or regurgitation where the native valve cannot be repaired durably
  • Bicuspid and unicuspid aortic valves
  • A small aortic annulus that limits the size of a prosthetic valve
  • Patients in whom lifelong anticoagulation should be avoided
2

What to send

  • Echo report with annulus diameter, cusp morphology, gradient and regurgitation grade
  • CT of the aortic root where available
  • Reports of any previous intervention
  • Age, weight and current medication
  • A one-paragraph clinical summary
3

What comes back

  • A written opinion on the approach — Ozaki, Ross, or prosthetic replacement
  • Proposed timing
  • The hospital suited to the case
  • A named onward referral if the case falls outside this service
